You are holding the final volume of IM Herman Grooten's trilogy on the Open Sicilian, from the acclaimed series "Understanding before Moving".

The first volume explored the Najdorf and Scheveningen variations, while the second focused on the Taimanov, Kan and Richter-Rauzer. This book completes the series with five further systems: the Dragon, Accelerated Dragon, Sveshnikov, Kalashnikov and Four Knights.

The aim is not to overwhelm the reader with endless theoretical detail. The real focus is on broader concepts and strategic themes: the interplay between structure and strategy, and the plans available to both sides.

Each chapter starts with an introduction to the key ideas for both White and Black, followed by a theoretical overview where those concepts resurface in concrete form, and is illustrated with carefully chosen, annotated model games – most of them drawn from high-level practice, with all analysis revisited with the latest engines.
